Designer of the Week

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: CYNTHIA VINCENT

When any fashion conscious girl hears the words “Twelfth Street”, the fabulous line TWELFTH STREET BY CYNTHIA VINCENT” consisting of trendy dresses, and silk blouses immediately comes to mind. But where did the designer Cynthia Vincent come up with this? It was actually name of the street in which she grew up on in Los Angeles, California; a street where her first design ideas emerged.
So where has this designer been since she left her home of twelfth Street? Cynthia Vincent began her training at the Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design under the M.A.G.I.C scholarship where upon graduation she received the Silver Thimble Award. After leaving school Vincent worked at several different fashion companies such as London-based Jane Ong & Co., Ltd. where she quickly rose to the position of head designer, and then in the U.S. at Harriet Selwyn. Vincent began her first company, St. Vincent, in 1993 but in 2002, she merged St. Vincent with another company allowing for Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vicnent to be born in 2003. Since 20003, Twelfth Street has become a favorite to celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Bilson. Just last week at Owl’s Lab, celebrity shopper Aubrey O’Day picked out a Deep V-Neck Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent blouse and happily posed while paparazzi shots were snapped away!

Trendsetter of the Week

TRENDSETTER OF THE WEEK: BEYONCE KNOWLES
What we love most about Beyonce, besides the fact that she celebrates "all the single ladies" is that whether it is day or night, she always makes fabulous fashion choices. Beyonce is one of the most versatile dressers and always looks awesome. Most celebs have paparazzi shots where they are caught unprepared and not exactly "camera-ready" in sweats, sans jewels, and hair disheveled; Beyonce on the other hand would never!

Even for a day of shopping, Beyonce was recently spotted walking the streets in torn denim, a burnout tank, fedora, and dangly earrings. She looked just as great as she does in her style hugging and leg flaunting dresses and cocktail wear.

When it comes to Beyonce's eveningwear she never neglects any aspect of her outfit. Notice at right how her white cinched waits dress didn't stop there. She paired it with gorgeous eye-grabbing earrings and embellished white pumps.

Beyonce has truly become an icon for the Owl's Lab girls; she demonstrates that each day it is important to wake up and want to look your best. You never know what may lay ahead and just as importantly... who you may see ;)

Designer of the Week

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: GINA NIGRELLI

Gina’s interest in vintage fashion began while studying abroad in Harare, Zimbabwe, where she found herself sketching and collecting rare pieces. She formally began her fashion career as a merchandiser at Diesel in Las Vegas and then moved to Chicago where she earned a degree in fashion design at The International Academy of Design. She and her husband relocated to the Caribbean in 2006. It was on the island of St. Thomas where Gina created the JULES SMITH line, blending the influences of her life experiences, vintage fashion interests, and the innate jewelry culture she found herself residing in. In 2008, Gina’s appreciation for history, adventure and the fashion community led her to settle in Fort Greene, Brooklyn with her husband, where she could further expand the Jules Smith line in the home-base of New York City.

Gina Nigrelli’s JULES SMITH collection is reminiscent of influential runway looks of decades past, infused with modern day influences. Gina’s aesthetic marries her unique contemporary point-of-view with the classic statement-making trends of the 70’s and 80’s. She’s identified the free-spirited essence of the 70’s and the glamour and excess of the 80’s as her brand inspirations. JULES SMITH styles include bold cuffs, star motifs, engraved monochromatic animal print pieces, chain link silhouettes, vintage charms, rings and bangles.

Trendsetter of the Week

TRENDSETTER OF THE WEEK: JESSICA SZOHR

Jessica Szohr’s character in our favorite show Gossip Girl is a very edgy artsy look and we love that she is able to take a lot of this flare into real life. The two things that Jessica rocks most often that we totally copy is her love for 1. skinny jeans and 2. fedoras. Whether walking the streets of NYC, dining at La Esquina with boo Ed Westwick, or hitting the red carpet for glam event, Jessica’s style is pretty consistent. A key lesson we have learned from Jessica is that we can stick with a style we love, like skinny jeans, but can keep it fresh season after season by changing up the colors. We have seen her in everything from slick grease jeans, light grey washed out colors, to classic bruiser J Brand skinnies. She then does a great job of mixing up the tops she pairs with her skinnies- she has done everything from girly floral tops like she did in her huge shoot for Lucky’s April 2009 issue, or she goes more punk rocker chic is an oversized Nation LTD tee shirt or leather motorcycle jacket. As for the fedora, who can blame her? Who doesn’t love a hat that cures any bad hair day and is absolutely adorable and trendy as well? Thanks Gossip Girl for the trend tips!!

Designer of the Week

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: RORY EDELMAN
Meet Rory Edelman, the extremely young and driven designer of the cool and hip California based line Rory Beca.

Rory Beca, who is only 24 years old, began her line in 2006. Rory studied fashion at both the St. Martin’s School of Design in London and at the Boston School of Design, but Rory’s real break into the industry began when she was working alongside Deb McGuire, a designer and stylist in Los Angeles. Deb worked on the sets of the TV shows “Friends” and “Crossing Jordan”, and was able to get Rory’s product onto actors of the shows causing Rory’s name to become established.

Soon afterward, Rory introduced her first collection – “a line of one-of-a-kind hand knit scarves and tops created from rare and unusual yarns and vintage pieces”. Because of its uniqueness, a buyer at Henri Bendel in New York, asked if she would be interested in doing a trunk show and the trunk shows sold out almost instantly motivating Rory to expand her line.

From there, Rory transitioned into a collection of one-of-a-kind dresses for red carpet events, and then evolved into a full lifestyle line of ready-to-wear dresses, tops, and skirts.
At Owl’s Lab, we heart Rory Beca’s style; we always turn to the line to find the perfect skirt or blouse to polish off an adorable outfit or to prep us for a date night or a just night of flirting. Season after season, her bright colors and adorable silhouettes keep us coming back for more and more!

Trendsetter of the Week

TRENDSETTER OF WEEK: ANGELINA JOLIE

Achieving Classic and Effortless Iconism Angelina Jolie has a way of always popping into my head when I'm struggling to get ready. What would Angelina do? I'm always enamored with her effortless style, and I know many other women are too!

What's almost humorous to me is the fact that Jolie keeps her look so simple that it’s her bare minimalism that draws us in! While other celebrities hire multiple stylist just to get them ready for their run to Starbucks, Angie always looks put together, without ever having anyone actually "put" her together. She wears black, white and gray all over - whether it’s trekking around with a just a trench on, or looking like mother earth in a maxi, she always looks so untried.

Another fashion note: her evening silhouettes are always clean, draped through the waist, and don either a boat neck shoulder or kaftan sleeve.

Angelina is a lot like our generations Jackie O - we remember what she wore just slightly, and for all the right reasons!

Designer of the Week

Designer of the Week: Ali Fatourechi

Thank you to Ali Fatourechi for creating Genetic Denim- finally a denim line that flatters every body type! It is really one of the hottest jean lines in the market right now. He has created a denim line that combines global fashion trends and individuality of fit and wash to tailor denim to your body, all the while making it the softest denim in the industry.

Ali Fatourechi started in the denim business in 2000 by creating a grassroots denim line- one of the first in the business. He wanted to speak directly to the consumer and did this by creating Mobile Denim, a premium denim company that visited college campuses across the country, thus starting a trend! After meeting with over 20,000 consumers he really got to know the customer on an intimate basis and developed a clear vision for his brand.

With nostalgia for the bohemian yet basic denim styles of the 70’s Ali has created a denim line with life and timeless appeal. Genetic pays homage to centuries past while remaining modern with their edgy silhouettes. They have mastered the art of creating a line that accentuates assets rather than forcing everyone into the same mold. They have introduced some fabulous spring styles like deep purple, hot pink and distressed skinnies, and awesome boyfriend shorts that just hit the floor at the Lab!!

Trendsetter of the Week

Trendsetter of the Week: Ashley Tisdale

We fell in love with Ashley Tisdale when she played the role of Sharpay in Disney’s High School Musical 1, 2, and 3, but who knew that now we would be flipping over her style?!

What we love is that Ashley can has multi-dimensional style and she looks age appropriate yet fun and trendy all the while. We love that never know which route or look Ashley may taken on a given day! There have been days where we have caught her looking punk rocker chic by wearing distressed denim and tons of layered scarves and cardigans, we have also seen her in a boho hippie style wearing a gypsy 05 maxi dress and a fedora, but we also love when she whips out her ultra girly mini dresses like she did to the premier of HSM3!

Ashley knows that to achieve a cool and mature look she doesn’t need to be revealing and wear tight fitting and busty clothes. Instead she opts for the newest and coolest denim, wears her hair in fun wavy tousled looks, and accessorizes with over sized bags, raybans, and cool jewelry.
