Designer of the Week: Diane Von Furstenberg

It is astonishing to think that Diane Von Furstenberg has been around for almost 37 years and after all of that time is currently one of the hottest contemporary lines on the market!! The line Diane Von Furstenberg was founded by the designer in 1972 and over time has evolved into a global luxury lifestyle brand with a complete collection of ready-to-wear, swim, accessories, footwear and handbags.

Diane Von Furstenberg, known to most as DVF, began with a simple chic wrap dress, and since its-re-launch in 1997, has once again taken the spot as a forerunner in the fashion world with hot trends and must-have items. In 2005, Diane was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) for her impact on fashion, and one year later, was elected the CFDA's new president. In 2008, DVF took the spotlight in world of television while two members of the cast of the MTV show “The City” took positions at DVF’s corporate office in the Meatpacking district in NYC. Having this tie between some of the best dressed NYC socialites as well as having actual appearance on the show reinforced the fact that DVF is still as hot as can be in the fashion world.
Owl’s Lab is excited to announce the arrival of DVF at our store, and what better to kick off this launch with the hottest bikinis, cover-ups, and silk maxi dresses. Her spring 2009 line is colorful line of bright colors that fuses together a mixture of Nantucket preppy and Bohemian chic silhouettes, while her bikinis are gorgeous prints and fabulous tan lines!

Come to Owl’s Lab now to check out the latest of DVF’s collection.

Trendsetter of the Week

Trendsetter of the Week: Reese Witherspoon

Wondering what to wear to an event where you need to look glamorous and elegant, yet want to have some element of style? Look no further than Reese Witherspoon. Reese will always be in our mind an icon much like Jackie O standing for class and sophistication in all of her fashion choices. Recently during the premieres of Monsters vs. Aliens, Reese has been looking better than ever as she has traveled across the globe promoting her film. Coming of age, (she recently turned 33), she has taken her classic style to another level by adding some of the most modern styles of shoes and embellishments to her usual flattering silhouettes. For example in the UK, she wore a classic black Prada dress but mixed it up with accents at the neck of ornate embroidery, opaque tights and woven satin booties. Then at the movie’s premier in LA, she wasn’t afraid to throw sequence in the mix with her classic high-necked look by wearing a green and silver sequence Rodarte dress and two-tone Balenciaga pumps. As for Reese’s casual looks, Reese always prioritizes comfort but manages to stay trendy when out on errands or low-key dates with bf Jake Gyllenhal. She does so by choosing causal lines like Current/Elliott boyfriend jeans, oversized tunics, and tops.

DESIGNERS OF THE WEEK: LAUREN ALEXANDER and APRIL LEIGHT of LNA

LnA was founded in 2007 in Los Angeles by partners Lauren Alexander and April Leight after meeting in Hollywood in their early twenties. They “realized that they both were fans of the simple basic tee and could not find it to go with their jeans for the day or a skirt for the night."*
After coming up with a concept of a man’s tee that was flattering on a woman, they launched the ‘Boyfriend Tee Collection’. “We wanted to design the perfect basic, the new staple for every woman’s wardrobe. Our goal was to create the new lifestyle t-shirt that mastered fit, versatility, and color range” said Lauren. It was then that “LNA had become a line that is simple and understated chic”* April adds. It paid off quickly, their first collection was snatched up by the trendsetting boutiques and major department stores across the world in under a year.
In 2008, LNA decided to expand onto other hot items such as the leggings, 80s inspired hoodies, cardigans, and super fine cotton henleys for both men and women.

LNA has an incredibly loyal celebrity following; women followers include: Charlize Theron, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Nicole Richie. As for the men, Jeremy Piven, Gavin Rossdale and Ryan Phillippe love the tees.

We at Owl’s Lab heart LNA from their insanely comfortable v-neck to their zipper and riding leggings that we find ourselves living in. We truly appreciate these girl’s visions for making fashion comfortable yet flattering!

TRENDSETTER OF THE WEEK: ZOE KRAVITZ --- The new Indie Film It Girl
She may have a famous last name, but Zoe Kravitz is making her first name famous on her own! Of course we shouldn't expect any less from this celeb span as her father, Lenny, has always been on the forefront of style with his all denim looks and rocker appeal! Zoe is all on her own though these days, hanging in tight Hollywood circles with the likes of Danny Masterson and Agnyess Deyn.

Zoe's represents the new indie, hollywood hipster - embracing bright colors, vintage prints and childlike accessories - her head to toe looks getting her on best dressed lists all over town. Whether she's getting creative with feathered or braiding headbands, mixing prints or carrying an uber bright clutch, her style is super spunky yet kind of sexy! One thing I admire about her trendiness is she can go from grungy hipster to old Hollywood glamour without looking like she is having an indentity crisis! She actually reminds me of a young Rachel Zoe!

It's easy to get Zoe's look if you take tips from her outfits here: Get a cropped black blazer and throw it over a relatively simple outfit - add a bright accessory like a red beret or yellow clutch to complete the look. Pair knee-high suede boots with a mini cotton dress and some long necklaces....I saw Lindsay Lohan do this recently and it looked equally adorable! The one thing you really need to be a Hollywood hipster- the confidence to rock your quirky style! Don't be afraid to test your fashion boundaries...it may get you on next years best dresses list!

xoxo Ash

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: EUGENIA KIM

Eugenia Kim didn’t react as most girls would after a bad haircut…. most girls would cry or head right back to the salon to try and have the damage repaired…. Eugenia on the other hand opted to simply shave her head! With this new ‘do’, Eugenia got the idea to make a feathery cloche in her millinery class at Parson’s with the hopes of it resembling hair for her new bald head. One day soon after, when out on a shopping trip in Soho, two store owners inquired about the headpiece and asked if they could set up appointments to see the “line”. She quickly headed home and designed two styles in a ton of color ways and within a week, her cloches were featured in the front windows of Bond 07 and Selima Optique in Soho and by the end of the month, Barneys had placed their first order. One year later Eugenia opened her own store in the east Village where she expanded her collection to include women’s and men’s hats, cloches, and bridal headwear. Now her line has expanded to include a variety of headbands and scarves, fashionable hats and fedoras, and belts! Eugenia Kim’s pieces are gorgeous and without fail are the perfect outfit completers! This spring with headbands and boho-chic being all the rage, we know that her headwear will be a huge hit in our Owl’s Lab store!

TRENDSETTER OF THE WEEK: KATE BOSWORTH

Black White and Grey All Over...

Kate Bosworth has proven time and again that color is totally overrated. I just went through pages and pages of photos of the beautiful and rail thin Bosworth, and the one consistency is her identification with Black, White and on some occasions Grey and Tan. Yet looking through each photo here, there's nothing even remotely boring or dated about Kate's style. Each of her looks is effortless and fresh, but at the same time vintage inspired.
Kate is a totally closet vintage junkie!

I have to say I can really relate to her in both aspects of what makes her fashion clock tick. For one, I have a closet chalk full of white, black, grey and tan, with an occasional pop color thrown in. I think that you can mix multiple blacks to achieve an uber stylish look (as she proves). You can do the same with white and grey - tan on the other hand shouldn't be your focal color. Secondly, she uses vintage style accessories, like a loose braided belt or chain shoulder bag, to give her outfits hipster edge.

Kate's totally ahead of the fahsion curve. She was doing the vest before it became the "it" item of this years Fall 2009 runways, she donned a Chanel sequined bustier dress ahead of the bustier trend that's all over Owl's lab right now and she started wearing men's blazers even before Ashley Olsen!

Kate, you are a total trendsetter - keep on giving us your signature look - we'll be watching!

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: MOISE EMQUIES, Founder & Designer of Splendid

Would you ever have imagined that one of the most successful and comfortable lines on the market came from a man who had absolutely no fashion experience? Moise Emquies began designing t-shirts as a side evening job for his friend’s store while awaiting the results to his California Bar exam. Eventually this part time t-shirt designer would become the founder and designer of the amazing line with amazing basics season after season, Splendid.
When Emquies began designing for his friend’s store, rather than focusing of patterns and pictures, he focused on finding the softest fabric, so he began studying textiles to educate himself. His first t-shirt line sold out immediately causing Emquies to become intrigued by this concept of experimenting with new fabric combinations.
This led to the creation of his first fashion company, Leopold, which he owned for nine years. It was also through Leopold that Emquies met and hired Pamella Protzel, the woman who would become the head designer for another label he currently owns, Ella Moss.
“After an exhaustive ten year search, Emquies finally discovered the right combination: 50% supima cotton (a luxurious cotton that gives the fabric body) and 50% micro modal (a form of rayon that is super soft and deeply absorbs dyes). It was then that Emquies finally decided on a name for his new t-shirt collection: Splendid.”
Emquies stated, “I had finally found a way to create the perfect t-shirt, a t-shirt deserving of the name Splendid, the ultimate, the best.”
To this day, Emquies has continued to impress his audience with lightweight and soft fabrics, basics that we buy season after season, and prices that are affordable and incredibly reasonable. The latest spring 2009 collection features his usual comfy favorites and also stylish pieces like oversized vests and burnouts that we are obsessed with!

TRENDSETTER OF THE WEEK: HEIDI KLUM

Move over Angelina Jolie, there's a new world-loving, endearing, charming and talented mother on the rise! Heidi Klum.

We've watched Heidi over the years evolve from fashion model to style icon, as the host of Project Runway, the face of Victoria Secret and the mother of Seal's children. She has soared to new heights these last couple years, and her confidence and knowledge of the industry has begun to show in what she wears both on the show and on the streets.

Heidi loves her jeans (the J Brand "lovestory" look phenom on her) and tees, and is stellar at the tunic and leggings look! I die over her sequined tunics (Elizabeth & James, one of our faves) shown here, which is layers over skinnies or Kova & T leggings and adds punch with beautiful jackets or blazers. Think about it ladies...you have these outfits in your closet, its just a matter of putting them together like she does!

Note: I keep seeing the essentiality of the "IT" Bag from week to week, so this week you need to go out and get a really HOT handbag! Consider it an investment...and when you are flinching at your indulgence, remember ladies, what Heidi taught you!

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: ELIZABETH & JAMES

“Elizabeth and James brings a couture sensibility to the contemporary customer. Seeking to narrow the gap between designer and contemporary clothing, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen act as muses and co-designers on this new fashion label. Inspired by the mix of uptown and downtown, masculine and feminine, and casual and dressy, the Elizabeth and James collection is unique in the mixture of androgynous menswear inspired blazers and shirts with delicate mini-dresses, feminine detailing, sequins and unusual fabrics. Look to Elizabeth and James for fashion forward styles made effortless.”*

We have loved Mary-Kate and Ashley ever since the days of Full House, but in these last few years we have become absolutely obsessed with them as fashion icons. They always seem to take styles we know and love and mix them in a way we never imagined would look so good. We were not surprised that when they launched Elizabeth and James we would be obsessed, and season after season we have continued to have been impressed. For this spring 2009 season Elizabeth and James does a fabulous job of putting together a collection of extremely girly pieces with edgy rock pieces. They recommend pairing a floral Lily Puliitzer-esque dress with a funky rock-n-roll cropped leather jacket. They also mix up girly style with menswear inspired oversized vests and blazers yet with a tapered touch in the sleeves or waist so our femininity can still shine through. We are loving these pieces for spring.

TRENDSETTER OF THE WEEK: VANESSA HUDGENS

I have a tendency to tear photos out of the weeklies when I see a celeb in a "look" I love. I know, it's a little high school of me, but I stick these photos away in my little fashion diary (bought for under $9 at Barnes and Noble) and use them for inspiration when I'm feeling icky about my fashion.

Anyway, I've started to realize that Vanessa Hudgens is my new style icon! Is that normal? I am years older than her (shhh don't tell) but I'm mesmorized by her ethnic pieces, effortless layering, and consistency with staying trendy. She does it on a young girls budget too, not that she needs to!

Layering is practically essential to becoming a style icon these days! Everyone who is noteworthy for their style is equally noted for heavy accessories, chunky knits, and outwear always included: Vanessa being no exception.

I think I have finally unlocked the key to effortless layering. You may layer away, but if you do not include ONE "KEY, OF-TREND" item in your look, you will just look as boho as the bum on the street. Note in these photos: the fringe bag by J. J. Winters (coming soon to the Lab), her motorcycle leather jacket, her grey kimono sweater (NOTE KIMONO'S ARE INSANELY HOT RIGHT NOW), her scarf, her beret and the slouchy boots were all "KEY, OF-TREND" pieces at the time she donned them. She doesn't wear them all at once, she keeps it simple by including just ONE.

I feel a sense of accomplishment today knowing that layering is actually really simple if you work by this one rule: you always need one key, of-trend piece!

Thank you Vanessa Hudgens!!
