Designer of the Week

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: VENA CAVA

The two designers behind the brand Vena Cava are Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai who originate from South Pasadena, Los Angeles. The two girls moved to NYC to attend the Parsons School of Design and just three weeks after graduating began designing the first collection of Vena Cava on their living room floor. They took a great amount of inspiration from ‘Indian draped clothing and colonial tailoring’ and loved adding embellishments they had on hand such as jewelry and buttons. Since their launch in 2003, they have had a great amount of success; one of their biggest feats was recently when they were named the runner up at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. This honor gave them $50,000 to invest in their label, enabling the label to explode and move out of their living room and into massive loft in downtown NYC. These two girls story is truly a fairy tale dream come true for two young designers with a vision.

Trendsetter of the Week

TRENDSETTER(S) OF THE WEEK: KATIE HOLMES & SURI CRUISE

First of all, if you were married to Tom Cruise, you would want to take his last name! So, my real question is, is Katie Holmes official Kate Cruise?

Secondly, regardless of the bad press Tom gets, he has the most adorable and fantastically fashion-fabulous family I have ever seen! The bottom line is, we all die to see what Katie and Suri will wear next, and thus this week is dedicated to style makers, Katie and Suri, Mom and Tot.

Other famous fashionistas are following in Kate and Suri's footsteps, such as Nicole and Harlow, but Kate and Suri take the cake when it comes to the most famous mother and daughter trend makers. Not only do they typically match, but they are also always wearing the latest hot trends, like stripes, waist belts, boyfriend jeans, baby doll dresses, animal prints, hats and darling ballerina flats. Katie and Suri Cruise are classic beauties with classic style, and the best way to steal there looks is to hone your own Jackie O and get to work on the traditional yet edgy woman inside you.

Two things about Kate and Suri's trendiness stands out to me: 1) they are an example of the Hollywood baby boom to which we must all comply and 2) matching with your child is now HOT HOT HOT!

So grab your matching tees, trench coats and trousers and go out for a day on the town, shopping and lunching!

Designer of the Week

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: BRYNA NICOLE

When Bryna Nicole began designing handbags, her goal was to ‘create a stylish handbag collection that portrays the mood of the woman carrying the bag. This mood can be confident and strong, innocent or playful –and it is always a little funky and somewhat functional. The woman that she designs for has a strong personal style and is fashionable and worldly.’
Bryna Nicole Hubbs was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area. After graduating from UCLA, her interest in fashion was stronger than ever and she moved to San Francisco's marina district and enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. She started working as a stylist and fashion consultant at a popular women's clothing boutique. She was able to cultivate her passion for putting the perfect outfit together and offered her services to many high-end clientele in the area. She found, however, that the perfect outfit was never complete without the perfect accessories. This bag, unfortunately was hard to find, thus the first collection of Bryna Nicole handbags was created.

Bryna’s bags have become all of the rage since Blake Lively took to her classic Loyola Satchel on the set of Gossip Girl and was caught wearing it around off the set in NYC. Bryna Nicole handbags have been featured on seasons 1 and 2 of Gossip Girl and have been seen on stars like Michelle Trachtenberg and Aubrey O’Day . Luckily Owl's Lab and Bryna Nicole have developed a strong partnership and Owl's Lab is proud to say that they have a Bryna Nicole Exclusive (which is pictured on Blake Lively above). TRENDSETTER OF THE WEEK: NICOLE RICHIE and RACHEL ZOE

Gone are the days of Myspace and TMZ trash talking?
…Remember the good old days when Nicole Richie posted the following about Rachel Zoe on her Myspace?
Monday, November 27, 2006
X-RAY
BLIND ITEM:
What 35 year old raisin face whispers her order of 3 pieces [sic] of asparagus for dinner at Chateau every night, and hides her deathly disorder by pointing the finger at me, and used her last paycheck I wrote her to pay for a publicist [sic] instead of a nutritionist?
HINT: Her nickname is lettucecup...
WOW, it’s pretty amazing how women get so nasty and then give it a year and become besties again! We can be rough ladies, let’s dedicate 2009 to being kinder to our fellow females, huh?!
Trendsetters of the Week Nicole Richie and Rachel Zoe are donning the hottest new trend of February – making up with your besty and looking Boho Chicilicious while doing it!! Haven’t you noticed that this is a super hot trend in Hollywood right now? Allowing bygones to be just that amongst Hollywood’s best layered and accessorized fashionistas?
In order to fit in with Nicole and Rachel’s sizzling new trend, one must take note of a couple important trendsetting tips: you must own a floral maxi dress, you must make up with a feuding best friend, you must have long messy curls and you must wear bangles!!
I get excited over this trend because I myself am a bohemian chic follower, and “I die” over many of Rachel Zoe’s looks. Regardless of if we have “personal” issues with her, she has created a look amongst the young Hollywood generation that will last for years to come. And Nicole Richie, with her svelte frame, always looks fantastic in her layered tops and tiny shorts. We forever heart the seventies with these ladies around.

Designer of the Week

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: SASS&BIDE

Sass & Bide is a fashion line based out of Australia that was founded by friends Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton in 1999. “Upon returning from the stalls of Portobello Road markets in London, the pair arrived in Sydney in 1999; filled with optimism, they aspired to start their own label. The primary choice of name 'folk' was unavailable and with less than 24 hours remaining until they lost their $100 deposit, the name "sass & bide" was coined by combining both of their nicknames.”* The label began by focusing on unique denim designs and then within two years expanded into two seasonal ready-to-wear collections. Sass & bide went on to be the first Australian designers to be invited to show their collection at New York Fashion Week and since then has become a favorite for its individuality and quirkiness. Today three lines exist: Sass&Bide, S&B, and Sass & Bide Denim.

Trend-setter of the Week

TREND-SETTER OF THE WEEK: JENNIFER HUDSON

In a triumphant return to her public image and to her music career, Jennifer Hudson shows us how to make a comeback in style. Not that she needed a comeback, because of the unspeakable tragedy that lead her to take time off, but JH shows us that Hollywood Glamour is alive and well.

Both her recent appearances in casual and evening attire have wowed the Owl's Lab staff. She seems to be glowing, healthy, happy and ready to take on her first solo tour coming this April.

Jennifer Hudson not only shows us that Hollywood Glamour will always be a trend, but that love (from her fiance), rest and reflection are just as good a trend as any.

For her attire, the military style - glammed up - at the Superbowl was one of our favorite transitional looks of the month. And then she looked chic as can be in a white, silver, and black color block dress- color blocking is a technique that will become huge this spring- way to go JH for being a fashion forecaster!

We look forward to seeing Jennifer's tour ensembles - she always looks at ease and dressed to the occasion.

Designer of the Week

DESIGNER OF THE WEEK: SONIA RYKIEL

Sonia Rykiel was born in Paris, France in 1930. Sonia was married to the owner of a boutique which sold his own label entitled “Laura”. In 1962, Sonia couldn't find any soft sweaters to wear when she was pregnant so she used a supplier that her husband used and designed her own first maternity dresses and sweaters.

As a result, the sweater has become Sonia’s symbol and she was crowned "Queen of Knits" by the Americans in 1967. Her first creation was called the “Poor boy Sweater”, and she started selling it from her husband’s label "Laura". When one of her sweaters made the cover of ELLE fashion magazine, she hit it huge. She later elaborated on her sweater designs and became the first designer to put seams on the outside of a garment and to print words on her sweaters, which she still uses today in her collections.

Sonia’s sweaters made a mark in the fashion world when sweaters were not considered an refined item. In 1980 Sonia was even voted one of the world's 10 most elegant women. Sonia and her daughter Nathalie just recently expanded into the United States and selectively sell their items to only the elite stores that parallel Sonia’s charm.

Trend-setter of the Week

TREND-SETTER OF THE WEEK: ALEXA CHUNG

When I began researching for our new column, le trend de setter of the week, I threw out a number of gifted fashionistas to play around with as our launch lady. I wasn't looking at the obvious, because at this point we are all aware that Kate Moss creates trends. I wanted someone with that je ne se qua, that unexplainable "x" factor.

We have no idea exactly how one grows to become a famous fashionista, it's as though the planets align and the fashion gods smile on a lucky girl.

Needless to say, during my search and discovery, I found this young thing, British Socialite Alexa Chung, whose reason for notoriety is unclear, but who is indeed a trend-setter. Her semi fame has been targeted towards the hipster website, The Cobra Snake, which was created as a blog by a kid who literally just takes pictures of his hipster Hollywood friends at their parties. It's a cult thing, and if you visit http://www.thecobrasnake.com/, you will get it, because it takes work to look grungy, chic, oblivious and totally there with it, all at the same time.

So I'm calling the Trend of the Week "Grunge Glam." It is an easy look to assemble and can be put together at the drop of a hat (you'll need one for this trend), or a headband (equally popular amongst the Grunge Glam girl.)

Grunge Glam Step by Step:
1) Take either an oversize blazer - borrow your boyfriends or your dad's smallest piece - or some form of layer worthy outerwear without major details.
2) Wear either a mini dress with plenty of embellishments, print or lace OR pair a silk waist skirt with a tucked in possibly decorative slouchy tank.
3) Some form of head gear helps.
4) A shoulder bag or a square bag works well.

It's a relatively easy look to pull off ladies, and we have Alexa Chung to thank for our fashion movement this week - "Grunge Glam." PS - Alexa looks a lot like Scout Willis doesn't she?
Hope have fun making this trend your own!
Ashley Thompson, Owner
